Van Gaal’s arrival has restored optimism around Old Trafford this summer
thanks to an impressive pre-season campaign. United come into the new
season after winning the last encounter 2-1 against Valencia in the
pre-season friendly. Prior to that, the Red Devils were in the USA for a
pre-season tournament named the International Champions Cup where they
beat both Liverpool and Real Madrid by a 3-1 scoreline, Roma by 3-2 and
drew 0-0 against Inter Milan.
The Dutch manager will not be able to count on the contribution of Van
Persie, who is currently injured, and Danny Welbeck or Chicharito
Hernandez will certainly take his place up in the front. New signing
Luke Shaw is sidelined so Ashley Young could get a chance to prove his
worth at left wing-back. Antonio Valencia, Rafael and Michael Carrick
are all looking unlikely to play too.
Swansea put up some interesting performances during the pre-season matches but they have been heavily defeated by Villarreal last Saturday at home. They have brought in a handful of new recruits including Gylfi Sigurdsson, Lukas Fabianski, Bafetimbi Gomis and Jefferson Montero to somehow compensate for the departures of Michu, who joined Napoli on loan, Michel Vorm and Ben Davies, who signed for the Spurs.
Monk will be without Emnes (knee) and Leon Britton (knee) for the trip to Old Trafford. Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge missed the friendly defeat to Villarreal but are expected to return to the side for Saturday’s fixture. The duo are both in contention for the wide roles against United, with summer signing Jefferson Montero another option. Kyle Bartley has featured prominently at centre-half in the absence of the now-departed Chico, and is likely to start alongside Ashley Williams
Man United and Swansea City faced during the first game of the last season as well at the Liberty Stadium and the Red Devils sealed a 4-1 win in David Moyes' debut as manager. Anyway, few months later the Swans did cause an upset winning 2-1 at Old Trafford in the FA Cup. Swansea won just 5 of 19 games on the road last season and picked up just a single point away against the top 4. There has been just one draw in the past eight meetings between the sides
