Belgium team have demonstrated consistency since their World Cup run, winning
13 of 18 fixtures, often in spectacular fashion. They scored three or
more times in nine of those victories while suffering only a 2-1 loss to
Portugal in a friendly match and a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Wales.
The Red Devils hammered 3-1 Italy in their most recent meeting, on
November 2015 at the Stade Roi Baudouin in Brussels. In four friendly
internationals in 2016 they lost 2-1 in Portugal, won 2-1 in
Switzerland, drew 1-1 with Finland and edged out Norway 3-2.
Marc Wilmots is confident a foot problem will not prevent Hazard from lining up. In defense Vincent Kompany, Nicolas Lombaerts, Bjorn Engels and Dedryk Boyata are absent through injury while Thomas Vermaelen is a doubt, meaning that Jason Denayer could partner Jan Vertonghen at centre-back. Romelu Lukaku faces competition for a starting spot in attack from Christian Benteke, Michy Batshuayi and Divock Origi as central forward.
Italy were unbeaten in qualifying, winning seven and drawing three of their matches to top their group four points better off than Croatia. The Azzurri have collected just two wins from their last six, though both of those were in their most recent fixtures following a 1-0 victory over Scotland and a 2-0 win over Finland. In two friendly matches in March this year Italy drew 1-1 at home to Spain and crashed 4-1 in Germany.

Pirlo and Mario Balotelli have been omitted from Conte’s
23-man-squad while midfielders Marco Verratti and Claudio Marchisio have
been ruled out through injury. Graziano Pelle and Eder are expected to
lead the attack, but Simone Zaza and Ciro Immobile are possible
alternative. Thiago Motta could be deployed in a deep midfield role to
partner Daniele De Rossi and help solidify his side. At the back, the
evergreen Gianluigi Buffon will keep goal with Juventus teammates Andrea
Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini providing protection
in front of him.
